“Physics West," a consortium of physics teachers from about 30 Will and DuPage county high schools will meet at Plainfield High School--Central Campus on Tuesday, April 17, 2018.
PHSCC science teacher Nickey Walker will host the meeting in room 2110 at PHSCC, 24120 W. Fort Beggs Drive, Plainfield. Dinner begins at 6 p.m. and demonstrations will follow at 7 p.m.
The organization meets monthly at alternating schools and promotes teaching methods that will engage students and stimulate critical thinking skills. It frequently works on aligning teaching with the new Next Generation Science Standards.
“Physics West” includes high school teachers and university and college professors.
Each meeting includes socialization followed by two hours of demonstrations and/or discussion. Demonstrations focus on ideas that introduce a particular physics topic, reinforce previous physics lessons, apply technology and multimedia enrichment to the classroom, or emphasize a particular laboratory technique.
Participants leave with a "make and take" demonstration that can be used in their classroom. The April make-and-take is a series or parallel circuit.
Walker has hosted for District 202 since 2007. She has gathered an extensive collection of demonstrations to share with her students.
